GREAT NEWS! From 1st July 2018, tourists are eligible for a tax refund as long as the combined amount of expenditure is 5,000 yen (excluding tax) or above, regardless of the category.
Japan has relaxed its tax-free shopping rule for its foreign visitors since July 2018. This means as Australians you can shop your heart out for all the cute souvenirs and tech gadgets to bring home for yourself and loved ones.
Previously, Australians had to buy up to $45 worth of consumables (5,000 yen) such as food, cosmetics or clothing to be exempted from paying the nation's 8% consumption tax, however now Australians will be eligible for the tax-free program if the total purchase amount of of both consumable and general items reaches up to $45 (5,000 yen).
